All started in 1919…
Bird & Yates was founded in February 1919 by Walter Bird and Frank Yates who, after returning from the Great War, decided to combine their efforts to start the business from Mr Bird’s mothers stable at the rear of the Crown Hotel in Cannock.
In the mid 1920’s they moved to the premises shown to the right, which was situated at the junction of Avon Road and Walsall Road, more commonly known now as the Bed Shop opposite the old Cinema.
As the business continued to do well, in 1949 Mr Bird and Mr Yates acquired a second site further down the Walsall Road. Here they were able to provide a fuelling station and in 1951 they expanded their workshop facilities to keep up with demand.
The business had a newly built showroom that was famous for household names such as Austin, Riley and Wolsley to name just a few.

In December of 2001, Bird & Yates made the decision to sell the site to a major supermarket chain after they stopped selling fuel and relocated from the Walsall Road site to where you know them today, just behind Brindley Honda off Brookfield Drive.
Since moving to the present-day site, the company has been in the more than capable hands of Andy and Jayne who have run the business impeccably, just as their father and grandfather did all those years ago.

2021
The company was bought by Craig and Lauren in March 2021, due to Andy and Jayne deciding it was the right time to retire.
As well as taking over the business, Craig and Lauren have also been able to retain the loyal workforce from David in the office, who I am sure you all know only too well, to the dedicated and hardworking technicians in the workshop.
Craig has worked in the motor trade for over 30 years. He has a vast amount of experience that he has brought to the business, from starting his career completing his apprenticeship with West Midlands Travel to running multi franchise car and motorbike dealerships throughout the West Midlands area, in the latter years.
It has always been Craig’s ambition to own his own business and it took him many years to be fortunate enough to find the right one.
Craig and Lauren feel proud and honoured to be able to keep the name Bird & Yates going in the Cannock area and are committed to continuing Andy and Jayne’s hard work, which has built a trusted relationship with local businesses and customers alike.
